Thermal Engineer

SUMMARY

As a member of the Advanced Technology group, the Thermal Engineer is responsible for performing thermal engineering tasks associated with analysis, design, and testing of Moon Express flight systems and payloads components, subsystems, and spacecraft. This position is located in Cape Canaveral, Florida and reports into the Vice President, Advanced Technology.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform trade studies and establish thermal control system architecture
  • Analyze and verify spacecraft thermal loads and balance
  • Model thermal control system performance and establish requirements for thermal control system components
  • Evaluate candidate components offered by external vendors
  • Select specific components for use in Moon Express thermal control system
  • Work with selected vendors to establish component interface and performance requirements
  • Plan and oversee the integration of thermal control system components into the integrated test bed and the spacecraft
  • Participate in thermal control system testing including unit-level functional and environmental testing and spacecraft level testing
  • Develop and tests script used to support thermal control during operations
  • Support mission simulations in performing thermal control tasks expected during operations; plan and provide thermal control support required during flight
  • Duties also include supporting trade studies, developing documentation, reviewing and evaluating products developed and analyses performed by engineering team members, subcontractors, or partners, and supporting new business development activities

REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in the analysis, design, and testing of thermal control systems
  • Bachelors of Science degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or related STEM field
  • Masters degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or related STEM field is a plus
  • Familiarity with spacecraft thermal control systems and the effects of the space environment
  • Ability to solve heat transfer equations for conduction, radiation, and convection
  • Self-starter who works with a sense of urgency
  • Ability to adapt to change in an entrepreneurial environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team
  • Proficient in using engineering analysis tools for spacecraft thermal analysis
  • Experience with software development using Java, C/C++, and/or Fortran
  • Experience with TSS, Thermal Desktop, TRASYS and/or SINDA
  • To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations under ITAR and EAR, applicant must be a U.S. citizen residing in the U.S., or a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. (“Green Card” holder)
  • Final candidate must pass a background investigation (conducted through a reputable third party) that may include an employment verification, criminal check, education check, driving record check, drug screening and/or credit check depending on the position
